Suffolk Show Platinum Jubilee Pageant Parade

Suffolk Show Platinum Jubilee Pageant Parade

   |   By

1st Martlesham Beavers, Cubs and Scouts took part in the Suffolk Show Platinum Jubilee pageant parade. The Lord, Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lady Clare, and Countess of Euston, represent the Queen to celebrate the achievements of the youth organisations and thank all volunteers who give up their time to provide the young people with these amazing opportunities. All those who attended the parade received their commemorative coin. The young people and adults also got the chance to enjoy the Suffolk Show.

All the leaders are incredibly proud of the young people who kept their focus whilst we waited almost two hours before the parade started. As with all great British events, the rain held off until the parade’s start, and so did the thunder, but these young people still held it together, centre stage with all eyes watching.

Plant a Tree for the Jubilee

   |   By

1st Martlesham Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were involved with planting a tree for The Queen’s Green Canopy to commence our Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Martlesham Heath Holderholders Ltd (MHHL) very kindly donated these trees and was also on hand to provide their green-fingered expertise with the planting on the village green.

Scouts Electronics Part 1?

   |   By

The Scouts created their own battery out of potatoes to power red, white and blue LEDs. We managed to get 24 Volts out of 36 potatoes! The Scouts learnt how electronic circuits are made, how energy is stored and how to measure voltage. The Scouts are working towards their Electronics badge, which we will continue next week.

Scouts Visit BT Adastral Park

   |   By

1st Martlesham Scouts completed their Digital Maker Stage 3 badges hosted by BT and UoS. The Scouts completed the European Astro Pi Challenge, which offers young people the fantastic opportunity to conduct scientific investigations in space by writing computer programs on Raspberry Pi computers on board the International Space Station (ISS).

They also received BT’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) and Digitech (UoS) tours. The Scouts learned about BT’s essential role in keeping the critical national infrastructure running and how UoS teaches and develops skills for the future.

We want to thank BT and UoS for organising and hosting this fantastic event.

Scout Tin Can Pancakes

   |   By

At Scouts on Thursday to kick off lent, we did Tin Can Pancakes. But I’m too mean to give the Scout pancakes without a slight twist. They made their handmade stove from a tin can or coke cans with tealights as a heat source. It was a great success, and I think the Scouts enjoyed it.

We are meeting at BT Adastral Park on Thursday 10 March at the earlier time of 6:55 pm as we will leave promptly from the visitor car park at 7 pm. We will be going on the Network Operations Centre and Digitech (UoS) tours. If we are successful, we will complete a Digital Maker Stage 3 by coding an application that will run on the International Space Centre!

This is not a session the Scouts will want to miss.

Scouts Night Hike

   |   By

Congratulations to all Scouts who accomplished their first 5km night hike on Thursday 17 February around Martlesham. I will be awarding Navigator Stage 3 to everyone who has completed all elements of this badge at the next session.

We were fortunate to exploit the weather window between storms Dudley and Eunice. It was a perfect evening for a night hike, not too cold, with clear skies, no rain, and critically no wind. It was very much the calm before the storm Eunice on Friday.

We will not be meeting next week due to it being half term. The next session will be on Thursday 3 March, starting at the usual time of 7:30 pm. We are planning to do tin can pancakes.

Scout Post

   |   By

Thanks to all who used the service and those who hosted the collection boxes: Duncans Butchers, Black Tiles Post Office, Runway Cafe, and J’s Fish and Chips.

The operation of Scout Post in the Ipswich, Kesgrave, and Felixstowe area is coordinated by the 4th Ipswich Scout Group and involves 10 Scout Groups who have processed about 71,000 cards this year.

In Martlesham, we collected 2486 cards sending 2264 of those to other groups, and received 1800 from them for Martlesham. We delivered 2103 cards in Martlesham and raised £720 to support Scouting.
